Two incomplete alphabets and a series of numbers form Hilda's small school sampler. She took much pleasure in combining the colours red and blue - in the borders and corners as well. She created her first name with the help of a third alphabet. You could make your personal sampler from the alphabets attached to the chart.

At my friend Margit’s home, you have been welcomed by six red school samplers hanging in the front hall for years. Hilma Lösner’s work is one of them. Four alphabets are harmoniously placed, corner motifs margin the sampler and she has centered her name, the year and a large rose. A red grosgrain ribbon lines her Piece.

School Sampler
The ABC, the four borders, and the four corner motifs of Ilse's cross-stich sampler have been taken from Selma Schöne's very popular pattern booklet (11th edition!). Selma was a teacher for women's careers.
"Faith, hope, charity" had to be part of her exam work. The school year ended at Easter in Germany in those days.

Elsa was 9 or 10 years old when she handed her red and blue school sampler over for assessment to the teacher at the end of year 3. She fixed a small notepad on the back of the work.
Most notable are Elsa's initials: The oversized capitals are decorated by carnation flowers in square stitch forming a counterbalance to the three alphabets and monogram pairs which were straightly executed in the style of the time.
She decorated the year with the three symbols of Christian education - faith, hope, charity. Elsa’s sampler is part of Margit Guerrein’s collection.
