Typical of Danish samplers is the existence of different embroidery techniques. In this small school sampler, there are the cross-stitch, the Algerian eye stitch and the double running stitch (or back stitch) in the monogram. The large monogram was often "stamped" with the aid of copper stencils. The stitcher fastened the edges nicely with a hollow seam.

Two kittens bend over a little plate, the only motif in Hanne's school sampler. A thin piece of fabric, prepared by the school, serves the young girl as stitching ground. Exercises in cross stitch are to the fore. Beginning with a row of cross stitches, easiest bands subdivide the two alphabet blocks. The sampler had to be completed by the end of the school year at Easter.

You can feel even after more than 120 years the joy of the stitcher designing her sampler, e.g. in rhythmic colour changes in the alphabet series and up to the last small band. In the big curvy alphabet she used six beautiful shades of blue in every capital. Small bouquets surround her monogram.
