Quite different from most other school samplers Lina started with a saying of everyday wisdom. She designed her beautiful motifs and the initials of her parents with four colours. The sampler is similar in its structure to her sister’s piece.

This happy little sampler is part of the large textile inventory of the Museum of European Cultures in Berlin (inventory number 18 B 322).

With bold colours and thicker wool thread, the little stitcher placed two alphabets and her selection of motifs – densely packed.

This school sampler signed by "ER" is packed: The two complete alphabets and the two rows of numbers – a must in German needlework lessons of the late 19th century – are framed by four different borders and corner motifs. The monogram is closely surrounded by the inner borders.

Within the given 'frame' (coloured selvage) the little schoolgirl was supposed to “fill” her sampler: simple stitches, simple borders, simple corner motifs, two flowers, a fly – she creatively solved the exercise!
