Ann Davies 1807

19th Century | Great Britain

This is Ann Davies’ sampler from 1807. Ann stitched her piece at 14 years of age, while she was instructed at the Ackworth School in York/England. She was born as the daughter of Edward and Ann Davies from Llanidloes on April 17, 1793. She attended this boarding school between 1805 and 1808, like her sister Elizabeth had done before.

Ann dedicated her sampler to her mother as well as to her friend and classmate Martha Dean. On the other hand Martha dedicated her sampler to Ann in 1811. Four times four half medallions form a frame around eleven cartouches and several typical patterns. All letters of the alphabet are scattered on this sampler wherever space permitted. Ann accentuated her lovely design by few red stitches in the rose.

The original sampler is in private property. The size is approx. 62 x 70 cm.
